Chinese Help Promised.

With Mr. Seet Tiong Wah, J. P., in the chair a public meeting was held at! the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, on Monday afternoon at 3.30 p.m. when Dr. Hallam and Mrs. Rolfe, Commissionera for the N.C.C.V.D., spoke on the subject of combating the prevalent social evil. The addresses were interpreted_into_Ho- kien and Cantonese by Messrs. Ong Thye Ghee and Boey Leong. It being a public holiday, the attendance was very good and consisted of members of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, representatives from various guilde, and teachers and students of many local Chinese schools. In the course of his lecture, Dr. Hallam ¡ably spoke on the question of syphilis and gonorrhoea and the means of combating this scourge. Mrs. Rolfe, who spoke from an economical point of view, showed some instructive diagrams and orged the for- mation of a local committee to educate the ignorant section of the community. She said that the Chinese traders had their excellent guilds, and other organi- sations which could assist a great deal in this campaign against the spread of disease and she would ask the President of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce to pass a resolution that even- ing. in the interest of public health, to co-operate and render the services calcu- lated to educate the public and check the dangers of venereal diseases, and finally to adopt such methods as would provide a free cure to all who need it. The Presi- dent, Mr. Seet Teong Wah, in a few ap- propriate words, signified the willingness of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce to assist in the important health campaign and thanked Dr. Hallam and Mrs. Rolfe for the very able and instructive dis- courses they had delivered to the mem- bera and others who attended the meeting| that afternoon. Mrs. Rolfe was then ask- ed to accept a beautiful bouquet
